Uta Schmidt opened the sales report for her first book and found a number that would have ended most writing careers. Nine copies sold. Full stop.
She did not stop.
That moment sits at the centre of her chapter in Unleash Your Greatness: From Discipline to Destiny — titled “Prisoners of Destiny: Unearthing Treasures in the Dark.” Schmidt, an author, educator and speaker based in Germany, took the stage with Les Brown and fellow co-authors at the Atlanta Airport Marriott on 1 February 2026 for the book’s global launch. She arrived carrying a thesis she had tested against her own life: that disappointment, delay and loss do not arrive by accident. They conceal something.
The chapter draws a direct parallel between Schmidt’s experience and two of history’s most famous prisoners. Nelson Mandela spent 27 years on Robben Island before reshaping a nation. Joseph, in the biblical account, descended from a pit to a prison before rising to lead Egypt. Schmidt argues that confinement — in whatever form it takes — functions as preparation rather than punishment. Setbacks, in her framing, serve as training grounds that build the character required for what comes next.
“We are not prisoners of circumstances; we are prisoners of destiny,” she wrote.
The nine-copy sales report preceded a career that defies its own starting point. Schmidt’s first book, Dream Chasers, earned her access to some of the most compelling voices of the twentieth century. She interviewed Archbishop Desmond Tutu. She interviewed Les Brown. Both conversations fed a body of work rooted in the conviction that adversity, properly understood, accelerates rather than halts a life’s purpose.
Schmidt grew up with dyslexia — a condition that shapes how she reads the world as much as how she once struggled to read a page. Her thinking centres on what she calls kairos: the Greek concept of divine timing, in which moments that appear random reveal themselves, in retrospect, as precisely placed. The nine copies. The interviews. The Atlanta stage. Each one, in her telling, arrived exactly when it needed to.
“Adversity is not a detour; it’s part of destiny’s journey,” she said.
Unleash Your Greatness: From Discipline to Destiny brings together co-authors from across the world for the second volume in Les Brown’s legacy series, published through True Legacy Publishing. The Atlanta launch event ran across a full day, gathering entrepreneurs and thought leaders from multiple countries. Further information and tickets for the series appear at www.lesbrown.com/atlanta.
