In a notable development within the construction sector, the William Hare Group has been awarded the steelwork contract for the 2 Finsbury Avenue project, part of the expansive Broadgate development in London. This selection by Sir Robert McAlpine underscores William Hare’s expertise in providing cutting-edge steel solutions. The project, valued at £500 million, is set to become the largest structure on the Broadgate campus, offering 750,000 square feet of office and public spaces.
The architectural design of 2 Finsbury Avenue is both ambitious and environmentally conscious, featuring a 21-storey West Tower and a 36-storey East Tower, interconnected by a 12-storey podium. A distinctive sawtooth-shaped façade, marked by triangular patterns, will be constructed with a bespoke steel framework, showcasing William Hare’s commitment to innovative design and sustainability. The building is engineered to achieve BREEAM Outstanding, WELL Platinum, EPC A, and NABERS 5-star environmental ratings.
Matthew Nesbit, a director at William Hare, remarked on the importance of this project: “Being able to bring our design, fabrication and delivery capability to life on schemes like this is testament to our market-leading position as a global steel specialist.” This statement reflects the company’s strategic alignment with pioneering construction practices that adhere to stringent environmental standards. Notably, William Hare has been involved in nearby projects like 100 Liverpool Street and 1 Broadgate, further cementing its partnership with the Broadgate joint venture led by British Land and GIC.
Adding to the significance of this development, the globally recognised hedge fund firm Citadel, alongside Citadel Securities, has pre-let more than a third of the new office spaces, indicating strong confidence in the project’s potential and its strategic location. This early commitment by a major financial institution is a testament to the anticipated success and prestige of 2 Finsbury Avenue.
With an expected completion date set in 2027, the project’s timeline is meticulously planned, with William Hare aiming to conclude its steelwork by summer 2025. This aligns with the overarching project goals and timelines set by the main contractor, Sir Robert McAlpine, ensuring a cohesive and timely delivery of this landmark development.
