Lidl has launched a pioneering Retail Leadership degree apprenticeship, developed in partnership with Kingston University. The four-year programme aims to merge academic endeavours with hands-on retail practise. Initially, 51 apprentices will be welcomed from a competitive pool of over 5,000 applicants, demonstrating significant interest from school leavers keen on advancing their careers in retail.
Participants will embark on their journey with an attractive starting salary of nearly £26,000, with potential earnings rising to £46,000 by the fourth year. The apprentices will engage in practical experience across in-store operations and attend sessions at both Kingston University and Lidl’s head office, Lidl House. This structured approach will provide them with a comprehensive understanding of the retail sector.
Stephanie Rogers, Lidl GB’s Chief Human Resources Officer, expressed her enthusiasm at the commencement of programmes designed to integrate over 100 new talents within Lidl GB, split between the apprenticeship and an annual graduate scheme. She emphasised the programme’s role as a significant milestone in Lidl’s 30-year history in Great Britain, reflecting its commitment to nurturing future retail leaders.
Further articulating the educational value, Professor Sanka Sivarajah from Kingston University’s Business School highlighted the necessity for bridging skills gaps within the industry. He underscored the apprenticeship’s value in equipping students with vital skills, such as digital marketing insights and financial competencies, essential for well-rounded management roles in larger organisations.
The collaboration between Lidl and Kingston University marks a significant step in developing the next generation of retail leaders in the UK.
