Service Employees International Union has released results of a survey indicating 42 percent of airport workers at the nation´s 30 busiest hubs live below the poverty line, the company said.
The company said security officers, baggage handlers, skycaps, cabin cleaners and passenger service workers are standing in the Fight for 15 movement calling for a USD15 minimum wage and union rights.
The survey found that nearly half of airport workers are immigrants. Nearly one-fourth have received some form of government assistance; a majority make less than USD12 an hour and report annual household income of less than USD25,000.
Service Employees International Union is a labor union representing almost 1.9 million workers in over 100 occupations in the United States and Canada.
