Primark, celebrating its 50th anniversary with rising profits, has taken a bold step by opening its first small-format store in Montijo, Portugal. This innovative approach reflects the company’s willingness to adapt and evolve, catering to local demands while maintaining its brand identity. The store, although just 27,000 square feet, is strategically positioned as an anchor within the Alegro shopping centre.
Montijo, a modest town across the Tagus from Lisbon, is home to approximately 55,000 residents. Primark’s decision to introduce a smaller store here, rather than a full-scale outlet, aligns with the local market size. This curated version of the store retains the look and feel of larger ones, focusing predominantly on fashion offerings for women, men, and children, with a small section dedicated to homewares. Mark Jordan, Primark’s director of space optimisation and store design, describes the homewares section as ‘fashion for the home.’
The store’s design is noteworthy, with reduced mid-shop wall heights allowing for an unobstructed view of nearly all areas from the entrance. Smaller signage ensures that products effectively speak for themselves, a feature that optimises the limited space available. Additionally, the store houses a newly introduced beauty concept, drawing comparisons to layouts seen in U.S. stores like Glossier and Birchbox.
Sustainability is at the forefront of this project. Primark has utilised eco-friendly materials such as ‘Ecoboard’ and ‘Smart Plastic’ for store fixtures, both developed from recycled components. Aluminium, favoured for its light weight and recyclability, features extensively, alongside a screed floor that replaces traditional vinyl flooring. Notably, recycling bins made from recycled Primark clothing promote sustainable consumer practices.
This small-format store serves as a pilot, rather than a trial, indicating confidence in this model’s roll-out across various locations, with a new store set to open in Bolton shortly. For smaller towns and cities, this format offers a local alternative to larger flagship stores, making Primark’s offerings more accessible without necessitating long-distance travel.
