Tony Hoggett, a pivotal figure in Amazon’s grocery division, has decided to step down, marking the end of a significant chapter in his professional life. This move comes as he seeks new horizons, having served nearly three years with the global ecommerce leader.
Before his tenure at Amazon, Hoggett was renowned for his strategic leadership at Tesco, where he was the group chief strategy and innovation officer and the group chief operating officer. At Amazon, he took on the role of senior vice president of worldwide grocery stores in 2022. His leadership was characterised by efforts to revitalise Amazon’s grocery segment, enhancing both its market presence and customer experience.
Hoggett’s strategic initiatives included a notable departure from Amazon’s technology-centric model in physical retail spaces. He decided to eliminate the cashierless Just Walk Out system in favour of introducing smart shopping carts. This shift signalled a new direction in Amazon’s attempt to create a more interactive and user-friendly shopping environment.
On LinkedIn, Hoggett expressed his gratitude towards his colleagues, stating, “After nearly three years at Amazon, it’s time for the next step in my career. My time at Amazon has been incredible, and I’m grateful to my colleagues for their support, guidance and friendship.” He further expressed optimism about the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance the grocery shopping experience.
Hoggett concluded his note by encouraging his former teams, “I’m optimistic about the work Amazon is doing to improve the grocery shopping experience for customers, and have no doubt the teams will keep the momentum going in my absence. I’ll be cheering you all on.” His departure marks a significant transition for Amazon’s grocery division, as they continue to evolve in a competitive market.
Hoggett’s departure signifies a new phase for both his career and Amazon’s future in the grocery sector.
