In a bid to foster carbon consciousness, HF Holidays has taken an innovative step by integrating CO₂ labelling into its walking holidays. This move is designed to provide customers with a clear understanding of the carbon emissions associated with their trips, aligning with the company’s sustainability objectives.
Recognized as a B Corporation, HF Holidays is committed to sustainability and ethical operations. The introduction of carbon labels is part of a broader strategy to cut the carbon intensity of its offerings by 5% each year. David Harrington, chief executive, emphasised the importance of transparency for their 48,000 members, stating that it supports their long-term commitment to environmental standards.
The company has partnered with sustainability expert ecollective to measure the CO₂ emissions per traveller. This comprehensive calculation encompasses all facets of the trip including accommodation, transport, activities, meals, and the involvement of leaders and tour managers. Significantly, it includes emissions from flights or rail travel originating from the UK if part of the package, thus assuring customers of the accuracy of the emissions data provided.
Currently, the average carbon footprint per HF Holidays trip stands at 180kg CO₂ emissions per person, reflecting a reduction of 11kg compared to the previous year. This achievement demonstrates the company’s ongoing efforts to minimise its environmental impact and encourage its clientele to make informed choices when planning their holidays.
Furthering its commitment to sustainability, HF Holidays has converted 16 of its country houses to utilise renewable energy. Moreover, the elimination of single-use plastics from their properties represents another step towards reducing their environmental footprint. To promote greener travel, the company has expanded its offering of rail tours and encourages online holiday browsing to reduce paper use.
This strategic approach underscores HF Holidays’ dedication to transparency and ecological responsibility, inviting its customers to partake in its journey towards achieving net zero by 2040.
HF Holidays continues to lead by example in the travel industry, prioritising sustainability and customer education.
