Co-op is launching a new initiative to support small suppliers through a brand accelerator and incubator scheme.
- The Apiary programme, already in its third wave, supports suppliers at the onset of their retail journey.
- This accelerator is their first, promoting diversity and inclusivity among suppliers.
- Participants gain access to learning opportunities such as masterclasses and mentorship.
- A cohort of 10 purpose-led suppliers will join the inaugural accelerator programme.
The Co-op is set to launch an innovative brand accelerator scheme, expanding its existing Apiary incubator programme, in a strategic effort to foster brand development and growth among smaller suppliers. Set to commence later this year, this initiative will include the third wave of suppliers benefitting from the Apiary programme, specifically aimed at suppliers just starting their retail journey. For the first time, the Co-op will also operate an accelerator programme, marking a significant progression in its commitment to enhancing range diversity and supplier inclusivity.
This new accelerator scheme is not limited to just new suppliers but is also open to existing suppliers, providing comprehensive support for their brand development. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in various skilled learning programmes, including expert-led masterclasses and valuable mentor networking sessions. Additionally, the scheme offers category buyer support, and access to Co-op’s ‘Gift to Give’ programme, a unique initiative where larger suppliers extend their support to smaller-scale enterprises.
According to Rebecca Oliver-Mooney, Co-op’s head of commercial for drinks, frozen, and community buying, this development allows the Co-op to work closely with small suppliers at different stages of their business journeys. Co-op is notably dedicated to fostering diversity in its product range and supplier base, seeking to collaborate with purpose-led suppliers, particularly those from under-represented communities or shared Co-operative values.
The accelerator programme will commence with an inaugural cohort of 10 innovative and purpose-driven suppliers. Among these are Bio & Me, Brewgooder, Dr Wills, Hip Pop, Nix & Kix, Play in Choc, Pleese Freezecakes, The Jolly Hog, TrueStart Coffee, and Zaytoun. These suppliers, selected for their entrepreneurial spirit and alignment with the Co-op’s cooperative values, will be provided with the necessary support and collaboration to accelerate their growth both within Co-op’s shelves and beyond, potentially reshaping the market landscape.
In summary, Co-op’s brand accelerator scheme exemplifies a robust effort to cultivate supplier diversity and growth, positioning both new and existing suppliers for greater market success.
