Asda is committed to reducing food waste through its expanding partnership with Too Good To Go, a renowned surplus food marketplace. This collaboration will now reach nearly 1,000 sites, aiming to minimise food waste by offering surplus yet consumable food at a fraction of its value. Asda supermarket and Express store customers will have access to the Too Good To Go app, enabling them to purchase ‘Surprise Bags’ for £3.30, each containing goods worth at least £9. These bags may include a range of items, such as chilled goods, ready meals, bakery products, and produce nearing its use-by date.
The rollout of ‘Surprise Bags’ follows a positive trial period, showcasing the initiative’s potential to significantly curb food waste. Since its inception in partnership with Too Good To Go in 2021, Asda has managed to save over two million kilograms of food from being wasted. This success story underscores the retailer’s dedication to sustainable practices and waste reduction.
Sam Dickson, Asda’s vice president for commercial strategy, operations and own brand, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership’s expansion, highlighting its contribution to Asda’s waste reduction goals. He remarked, “We’re delighted to be bringing Too Good To Go to more sites across our estate and our food service partners, as we remain committed to reducing food waste through innovative solutions.”
Beyond its collaboration with Too Good To Go, Asda is actively broadening its food redistribution network. This effort includes a strengthened ‘back of store’ donation scheme established in June, which emerged from a new partnership with FareShare, a long-standing food redistribution charity, and Olio, a local food sharing app. Through these efforts, Asda has increased the donation slots available to its stores by over 680, further cementing its role in preventing food waste.
Asda’s expanded partnership with Too Good To Go underscores its strong commitment to sustainability and innovative food waste solutions.
