Lidl has taken a significant step by introducing its first-ever Retail Leadership degree apprenticeship in collaboration with Kingston University. This new four-year programme is specifically crafted to blend academic rigour with real-world retail experience, reflecting the dynamic needs of the retail industry.
The scheme has garnered considerable interest, evidenced by the more than 5,000 applications received. Eventually, 51 promising school leavers have been selected to participate, setting the stage for a new generation of industry leaders. The apprentices will commence their journey earning a salary of nearly £26,000, with the potential to increase to £46,000 by the fourth year, presenting a financially rewarding opportunity.
Throughout the programme, students will be immersed in practical learning environments within Lidl stores, complemented by regular academic pursuits at Kingston University and developmental experiences at Lidl House, the company’s head office. This blend of practice and theory aims to deepen their understanding of the retail sector’s complexities.
Stephanie Rogers, Lidl GB’s chief human resources officer, expressed her enthusiasm, highlighting the strategic partnership with Kingston University as a landmark achievement. She stated, “I’m thrilled to welcome over 100 talented individuals to Lidl GB through these programmes… investing in the next generation of retail leaders.”
Kingston University’s Professor Sanka Sivarajah added that the apprenticeship addresses crucial skill gaps within the industry, providing apprentices with essential digital and financial competencies necessary for becoming well-rounded managers in large organisations.
This initiative underscores Lidl’s dedication to developing skilled professionals equipped to meet future retail challenges.
