In a bold move to facilitate seamless access to healthcare, Tesco has collaborated with prominent UK healthcare firms. This initiative allows customers visiting the revamped Cheshunt Extra store to receive medical consultations and treatments while they shop, marking the debut of Tesco’s dedicated health zone. This innovation aims to provide both food and health solutions under one roof, enhancing the overall shopping experience by integrating comprehensive wellness options.
The pilot project at Cheshunt Extra is the spearhead of a larger rollout, with plans to extend these healthcare services to Hexham, Northumberland, and West Durrington, West Sussex by 2025. Should the pilot prove successful, the initiative stands to spread across multiple locations nationwide, offering unprecedented convenience to Tesco’s customers.
A variety of healthcare services are made accessible through this programme, including virtual GP appointments facilitated by Bupa. Customers can also benefit from weight management support, earwax removal, menopause management consultations, and contributions to the Our Future Health programme, which aims to become the UK’s largest health research initiative. In addition, Tesco continues to offer existing pharmacy services that include flu vaccinations, NHS Pharmacy First services, blood pressure monitoring, and guidance on chronic conditions such as cancer and diabetes.
Healthcare appointments are hosted in two newly established private consultation rooms within the store, offering privacy and specialist care. These sessions are administered by pharmacists or virtual and in-person appointments with other healthcare professionals, ensuring customers receive timely and expert advice.
Ashwin Prasad, Tesco’s chief commercial officer, emphasized the significant role Tesco’s store network can play in providing accessible healthcare, thus alleviating some of the strain on the NHS. Prasad highlighted the opportunity for customers to conveniently access healthcare alongside their regular shopping, potentially fostering preventative health measures and improving public wellbeing. He further noted the importance of feedback and ongoing assessment as Tesco seeks to refine and expand the service.
Tesco’s foray into integrated healthcare within retail underscores its commitment to enhancing customer access to essential services.
