Springfield Partnerships has embarked on an ambitious project to construct 42 affordable homes in Elgin, Scotland. This initiative represents a strategic collaboration with Grampian Housing Association, intending to mitigate local housing shortages and support community needs.
Located in Elgin South, this new village development will feature an array of housing types including bungalows, terraced houses, cottage flats, and apartments. The project’s design emphasises energy efficiency, incorporating air source heat pumps to deliver heating and hot water, thus ensuring minimal environmental impact and reduced running costs for residents.
In a bid to cater to a diverse population, the development includes 12 apartments specifically designed around communal spaces for individuals with learning disabilities. This thoughtful design aims to provide independence and support, aligning with both local and national housing strategies that promote equality and accessibility.
Marie Burnell, a learning disability care manager with Health and Social Care Moray, highlighted the importance of such projects, stating: ‘Working together with Springfield Partnership and Grampian Housing, we are able to secure high quality and accessible housing for people with learning disabilities.’ Her sentiments underscore the essential role of appropriate housing in empowering individuals to lead independent lives.
Tom Leggeat, managing director of Springfield Partnerships, noted the project’s significance amidst current national housing challenges. He pointed out the critical need for partnerships in addressing specific community requirements, especially given budget constraints faced by local councils. ‘Projects like this will make a real difference to the people that will call this development home,’ Leggeat remarked, emphasising the positive impact on future residents.
Craig Stirrat, chief executive of Grampian Housing Association Group, echoed these views, praising the initiative’s contribution to creating equitable living conditions. He asserted that the provision of safe, secure, and energy-efficient homes enables individuals to flourish and achieve well-being within the community. Stirrat expressed his enthusiasm for the continued partnership with Springfield Partnerships and Moray Council.
Currently, construction has commenced on the main development, with planning permissions for the specialised apartments anticipated shortly. This initiative marks a significant step towards fulfilling the demand for affordable homes in Elgin, thereby promoting inclusive societal growth.
