Over a third of employers (36%) in the UK have seen an increase in employees working from home in the past year, according to new research by Acas.
The government-funded arbitration service said that the rising cost of living — including the cost of travelling to and from the workplace — was one factor behind this shift.
Around half (51%) said there had been no change, while 7% reported a decrease in staff working from home.
Previous research showed an increase in home working compared to before the pandemic.
“For some workers, the cost of commuting is eating into their budgets, while for others, going to their workplaces saves on home energy costs,” said Acas chief executive Susan Clews.
“It’s important for businesses to work with staff to agree suitable ways of working for specific roles, taking account of individual circumstances and regularly review arrangements.”
Home or hybrid working is valued by some employees as it helps them to balance their work and personal responsibilities (and reduce travel costs).
These types of working arrangements can help businesses attract and retain staff that value this flexibility, Acas said.
