Farrans Construction has begun the initial phase of construction for Widmore Park Village, a retirement community located in Sonning Common, south Oxfordshire. The project, valued at £45 million, is to be developed by Inspired Villages. The first phase includes the creation of 73 homes designed specifically for residents aged over 65, alongside the development of a wellness suite within the village centre.
Widmore Park Village is intended to be a comprehensive community with plans to eventually house 133 residential units. The village will also feature a range of facilities designed to promote a vibrant lifestyle for its residents including a restaurant, cafe, hair salon, and library. Additionally, the wellness centre will offer a swimming pool, steam room, treatment rooms, and a fully equipped gym with a fitness studio.
As Shaun Whelan, the construction director for Inspired Villages expressed, “We’re hugely proud of the community we’re creating at Sonning Common and know Widmore Park will join our nine operational villages to become a great asset to the local area, whilst supporting the provision of housing for the region’s over 65s in a sustainable and conscious way.” This statement underscores the developers’ commitment to creating elder-friendly environments that are not only functional but foster community and engagement.
Farrans’ regional director Glenn Gilmore added, “We are proud to be delivering this important scheme for Inspired Villages and we recognise how important it is to have well-designed, high quality retired living developments like Widmore Park which promote activity, community and sustainability in our later years.” The statement highlights the importance of strategic design in elderly housing, focusing on elements that enhance the quality of life and encourage active participation within the community.
Widmore Park Village represents a significant step forward in providing sustainable, community-focused housing for the elderly.
