EasyJet has introduced a novel travel offer named ‘Grans Go Free’, designed to facilitate and promote multigenerational holidays. Commencing at noon on February 1, this initiative enables a grandparent to travel at no cost on family bookings across various European locales, notably Spain, Greece, and Italy.
Supporting this initiative, research indicates that 51% of families had never embarked on an international holiday with grandparents, illuminating a significant opportunity for shared experiences. Moreover, a substantial proportion of respondents, 56%, expressed regret for not having spent more time with their grandparents, underscoring the emotional and relational value such trips could offer.
Further research results demonstrate the demand for multigenerational travel, revealing that 59% of British adults desire to spend more time with older family members. Similarly, 57% wish to create memorable experiences with grandparents, while 73% see holidays as an opportunity to learn more about their grandparents’ lives.
The initiative aligns with EasyJet’s strategic insights, which have identified a growing trend in trips involving three or more generations. Limited slots are available under this offer, with conditions mandating the presence of at least one child per booking and the provision of proof concerning the grandparent’s age and familial connection at hotel check-in.
The proposed destinations resonate well with family preferences, with Spain being favoured by 18% of potential travellers, followed closely by Italy and France at 13% each. Additionally, the research suggests 54% of families would let grandparents choose the travel destination, showing respect and appreciation for older family members’ choices and preferences.
Financial contributions from grandparents are not expected by all; only 35% would anticipate a financial input from grandparents during the holiday. A more considerate approach is seen, as 45% perceive grandparents as the primary earners, yet prefer to cover the expenses themselves as an act of gratitude.
EasyJet holidays’ chief operating officer, Matt Callaghan, elaborated on the significance of the offer, emphasising the cherished nature of grandparent-grandchild relationships and the benefits of investing time in them. These sentiments were echoed with the proposition that such family holidays offer not only shared joy but also practical benefits like childcare during trips.
The ‘Grans Go Free’ deal by EasyJet Holidays serves as a pioneering step towards fostering deeper family connections through shared travel experiences.
