Having reached the significant milestone of 60 years in operation, Border Travel stands as a testament to resilience and adaptability in an industry known for its volatility. Founded in 1964 by Hal McGhie, this Dumfries-based agency has not only weathered the challenges of the travel sector but has managed to thrive even amidst economic uncertainties.
Gary Jardine, the retail manager of Border Travel, who joined the agency in 1999, expressed pride in achieving such longevity in a fiercely competitive marketplace. “It’s a fantastic achievement for any business to achieve that longevity, especially when you’re in an incredibly competitive industry,” Jardine noted, highlighting the dedication and hard work that have been integral to the agency’s success.
Under Jardine’s leadership since 2003, the agency has expanded, with a retail team of 11 staff members contributing to its independent status and growth. The team, described as exceptionally committed, includes long-serving members who have been with the business for decades, providing stability and continuity.
The COVID-19 pandemic posed unprecedented challenges, yet Border Travel not only survived but thrived, demonstrating its strategic acumen by capitalising on the commitment and performance of its staff. Jardine credits their ‘fantastic’ performance during this period as pivotal to emerging stronger post-pandemic.
Despite the digital age’s pressure on high street entities, Border Travel proves the high street is not yet obsolete. “Last year was probably the most successful year in our history,” recounts Jardine. With a reported turnover increase of 40%, the company is ambitiously aiming to replicate such success, beginning an ‘amazing’ 2024 with significant customer engagement and demand.
In recent years, Dumfries has seen a decline in traditional travel agencies, dwindling from six to merely two, yet Border Travel continues to defy trends by evolving its services and competitive pricing strategies. Jardine acknowledges the importance of adapting to changing market demands, ensuring the agency remains a cornerstone of the local high street.
Gary Jardine’s experiences at Border Travel reflect broader industry trends, where adaptability and commitment to customer service have enabled them to succeed where others have failed. By constantly innovating and refining their approach, Border Travel not only endures but prospers in a fluctuating market.
Border Travel’s 60-year legacy exemplifies resilience and adaptability in a competitive industry.
