TechWM, a prominent business body within the West Midlands’ technology sector, has recently embarked on a strategic overhaul by introducing new leadership to its board. This initiative is in response to its substantial growth, as evidenced by a 78% increase in revenue up to July 2024, positioning the organisation for further impact and influence ahead of its sixth annual Birmingham Tech Week.
Taking the helm as chairman is Jason Sahota, a seasoned veteran in the domain of technology and business. With over two decades of experience, Sahota’s expertise spans advisory roles in technology start-ups and scale-ups, particularly within the West Midlands, making him a pivotal figure in steering TechWM towards increased strategic success. He replaces Kim Leary, a founding member who played a crucial role since the inaugural Birmingham Tech Week in 2019.
Kim Leary’s departure from the chair role marks a significant transition; however, she will maintain her involvement as a board member. Her tenure is marked by a strategic evolution from a predominantly operational body to a more diverse and strategic organisation. Reflecting on her time as chairwoman, Leary expressed pride in the board’s transformation, stating: “TechWM has achieved so many successes and has become a vital part of the tech ecosystem here in the West Midlands.”
The board’s composition has been further enhanced by the appointment of new members, including Elizabeth Zeddie Lawal and Joanna Birch, who bring valuable experience from different sectors. Lawal, serving as vice-chairwoman, is the founder of a creative agency, while Birch acts as chief innovation officer at a property investment firm. Completing this dynamic line-up is Daniel Campion, the chief executive of a software company, adding to the board’s diverse expertise.
Alongside these appointments, Victoria Pargetter-Garner joins TechWM as the new director of digital skills and commercial impact from the University of Birmingham. This move underscores TechWM’s commitment to advancing digital proficiency and commercial outcomes across the region.
Through strategic appointments and leadership transitions, TechWM is poised to continue its significant influence in the West Midlands’ tech landscape.
