JD Wetherspoon issued a profit warning on Wednesday, with the pub group’s shares falling 8.1% in early trading after chairman Tim Martin said full-year profits would fall short of market expectations.
Analyst consensus ahead of the announcement had placed underlying pre-tax profit for the year at £70.8 million, according to a Hargreaves Lansdown share research note. The company did not provide a revised figure.
Sales Growth Falls Short as the Wetherspoon Profit Warning Lands
Like-for-like sales rose 4.0% in the 12 weeks to 19 July, with year-to-date growth of 4.2%. Both figures came in below the company’s own expectations.
Martin said the shortfall reflected a combination of factors. ‘Profits for the year are likely to be below market expectations, with marginally lower sales than anticipated in the final quarter, combined with higher costs in the areas of food, labour, repairs, energy and business rates,’ he said.
Year-end net debt is expected to be around £720m, broadly flat against the prior year-end.
Estate Activity and Shareholder Returns
Wetherspoon opened eight managed pubs and sold nine in the year to date, leaving its estate at 793 sites. The group’s franchise operation added 15 pubs this year, bringing total franchised sites to 23.
The group has bought back 6,402,368 of its own shares for cancellation at an average price of £6.52, according to the corrected pre-close trading update filed on Investegate. Hargreaves Lansdown reported total buyback expenditure in the current financial year of £41.7 million.
Wetherspoon also spent £12.2m purchasing the freehold reversions of four pubs. Total expenditure on freeholds since 2011 now stands at £489m.
Scale of the Business
Wetherspoon directly employed 42,081 people as at 27 July 2025 and reported an annual turnover of £2,128 million for the financial year ending on that date, according to the company’s modern slavery statement.
The group operates across the pub sector with a workforce whose pay and incentives are weighted heavily toward site-level staff. In the financial year ending July 2025, the company paid £45.0 million in bonuses and free shares to employees, with 86.3% going to staff working in pubs, according to the JD Wetherspoon people page.
Results Date
Preliminary results are scheduled for 2 October 2026. The original trading statement, filed on 22 July 2026, contained a date error that was subsequently corrected via a follow-up RNS on Investegate.
The key number for investors to watch in those results will be whether the final pre-tax profit figure lands materially below the £70.8 million consensus or merely clips the lower bound of analyst forecasts.
