The elevation of Gareth Jones to the position of Group Managing Director at GMI Construction Group marks a significant shift within the organisation’s leadership structure. Gareth, whose career has been characterised by dedication and strategic acumen, will succeed Lee Powell, the outgoing chief executive who is transitioning to a new role with Henry Boot Construction in the new year. This change at the helm is set to occur after a structured handover period ensuring a seamless transition.
Jones’s professional journey commenced at the youthful age of 17 when he embarked on a career as a trainee site engineer. His commitment to his profession was mirrored in his academic pursuits, as he simultaneously pursued a degree in construction management and civil engineering. These foundational experiences propelled him into a 12-year tenure with Galliford Try, during which he ascended to the roles of site and project management by the age of 23.
In 2018, Jones joined GMI Construction as a construction manager, bringing with him a wealth of experience gained from his five-year tenure at Thomas Vale. During his time at Thomas Vale—which became part of Bouygues Construction—he further honed his project management expertise. His leadership capabilities were soon recognised, leading to his role as Divisional Managing Director for the Midlands at GMI, where his strategies contributed over £85 million to the group’s £330 million revenues.
Gareth Jones has expressed his enthusiasm about the promotion, stating he is “absolutely delighted to be leading GMI”. His vision for the company is clear: to drive profitable growth and uphold the high standards of project delivery. This sentiment is echoed by GMI chairman, Jarrod Best, who commended Jones as an “asset to the team”. Under Jones’s stewardship, GMI intends to continue its focus on consolidating its gains and enhancing project delivery across its operations.
Gareth Jones’s appointment as Group Managing Director heralds a new chapter for GMI, promising maintained excellence and strategic growth.
