In a crucial development for the City of London’s architectural landscape, Permasteelisa has secured the esteemed facade package for the £300 million Salisbury Square development. This project, also known as the Justice Quarter, will feature the City of London Police headquarters and a new court house. The move underscores the project’s significance in modernising the capital’s infrastructure.
Mace has been appointed as the main contractor, revealing the project’s scale and complexity, while Keltbray is responsible for intricate sub- and superstructure works. Both companies are renowned for their expertise in handling such demanding projects, reflecting the development’s magnitude.
The facade of the City of London Law Court will incorporate granite and limestone, a nod to the historic civic architecture of the Square Mile. According to Permasteelisa, this design will embody a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional designs, marrying history with modernity in a seamless blend.
On the other hand, the City of London Police Headquarters will be characterised by a steel and glass facade designed to be weather-resistant and to harmonise with the adjacent building’s brickwork. This architectural choice aims to provide durability and aesthetic continuity, contributing to the district’s visual coherence.
Both the Permasteelisa and Gartner brands are engaged in the project, highlighting their specialised roles in different facets of the development. The bespoke facade for the Police HQ will be manufactured in Italy by Permasteelisa, while Gartner will focus on the Law Court’s exterior, developed in Germany. Such international collaboration underscores the project’s global importance and expertise involved.
Site installation is anticipated to begin in summer 2025, with a completion target set for September 2026. Permasteelisa’s CEO, Liam Cummins, emphasised the development’s pivotal role in the future of the City of London and expressed honour at the collaboration with Mace. This statement aligns with the project’s ambitious goals in redefining the city’s architectural footprint.
Remarkably, despite its past dominance in the facades market as the UK’s largest envelope specialist, Permasteelisa reported an £11.2 million pre-tax loss recently, partly due to inflation and legacy project challenges. Turnover has slightly decreased from £137.6 million to £132.8 million, reflecting the firm’s ongoing adjustments in a challenging economic environment. Liam Cummins, formerly of Kier Construction, took over as CEO earlier this year, steering the company through these transitional times.
