Esh Construction has secured a contract worth £6.4m to undertake the construction of a new southern junction on the M181 motorway, just outside Scunthorpe. This major infrastructure project is part of a wider initiative to enhance connectivity in North Lincolnshire. Work is scheduled to commence at the end of June, with completion projected by spring 2025.
The primary objective of the new junction is to provide a bypass for the village of Burringham, which currently experiences high levels of congestion, particularly at Berkeley Circle. By redirecting traffic away from this area, the development is expected to significantly reduce travel times for commuters travelling to and from Scunthorpe, ultimately enhancing the daily journeys of local residents.
In addition to improving traffic flow, this infrastructure development is poised to unlock new opportunities for residential expansion. The strategic location of the junction will facilitate access to areas earmarked for new housing, thereby supporting the growth aspirations of the local community. This follows a successful previous project where Esh Construction completed another junction along the same motorway in 2021, indicating a sustained investment in regional infrastructure.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, expressed gratitude towards local MPs Andrew Percy and Holly Mumby-Croft for their support in securing government funding through the levelling up agenda. Their advocacy was pivotal in advancing this project, which represents the second significant investment in the motorway within recent years. Cllr Waltham stated that this is a vital piece of infrastructure that will improve connectivity not just for residents of Scunthorpe but also for those in surrounding areas such as Bottesford, Ashby, and Messingham.
The development of the new M181 junction is set to enhance regional connectivity and support community growth.
