This week, London witnesses a pivotal change in its waste management sector with the introduction of Sortera, an initiative that represents the strategic merger of GBN Services and O’Donovan Waste Management. This development follows the acquisition of these two London-based entities by Sortera, a Swedish company that itself was taken over by the private equity firm Nordic Capital in 2021.
The new entity, Sortera, has taken charge of six key waste management sites across London, namely in Rochford, Harlow, Edmonton, Uxbridge, Tottenham, and Wembley. This operational shift not only includes site management but also encompasses the integration of close to 400 existing employees from GBN and O’Donovan into Sortera’s operational framework.
Mark McCleery, appointed last autumn as the managing director to lead Sortera’s UK venture, remarked, ‘We are thrilled to introduce Sortera’s innovative approach to waste management to the UK market. By integrating the expertise of GBN Services and O’Donovan Waste Management and implementing the values that have made Sortera so successful in the Nordics, we’re excited to bring the kind of innovative digital solutions, international sustainability insights and operational excellence that address the evolving needs of the construction, recycling, and waste management industries.’ This statement highlights Sortera’s strategic vision to foster advancements in the sector.
Sortera is not only poised to streamline waste management processes but also intends to extend its services portfolio in the United Kingdom to embrace water processing solutions. This expansion plan includes deploying advanced testing, analysis, and treatment technologies, thereby enhancing its service offerings and market footprint in the region.
The debut of Sortera signifies a dynamic shift in London’s waste management industry, promoting modern solutions and sustainability.
