Since the introduction of the Modal Shift Programme in September 2023, the rail freight’s share has surged from 21% to an impressive 30%. This shift underscores a concerted effort to promote sustainable transportation options among freight owners.
The success of the Modal Shift Programme has been marked by the launch of four additional daily rail services from Southampton, cumulatively increasing the number of weekly scheduled trains to 172. This expansion represents a substantial commitment to facilitating more efficient and environmentally friendly freight transport across the UK.
In alignment with its environmental goals, DP World’s initiative is estimated to remove 300,000 truck journeys from the country’s roads each year. Additionally, an incremental saving of approximately 6,400 tonnes of CO2 was recorded within the first six months of the programme. These figures speak volumes about the potential impact of rail freight on achieving sustainability targets.
John Trenchard, Vice President of DP World UK Commercial and Supply Chain, highlighted the importance of the programme, especially in light of the challenges posed by geopolitical uncertainties and the pressing need for supply chain decarbonisation. Trenchard stated, “Due to the positive increase in the share of rail freight since the trial’s inception, we believe that we can target a 40% share of rail freight target in 2026.” Such optimism reflects DP World’s forward-looking strategy in creating solutions that benefit all stakeholders in the supply chain.
To further incentivise this modal shift, financial reviews will transition from quarterly to biannual assessments starting October, illustrating the programme’s maturation and sustained growth.
