Construction specialist Glencar has successfully completed a major £28 million warehouse at Liverpool’s prominent Alexandra Dock, enriching the port’s capability for handling diverse goods efficiently. With a sprawling area of 240,000 square feet, the facility is indicative of future-ready infrastructural advancements catering to the multifaceted needs of modern logistics.
The facility, meticulously designed by renowned architects Chetwoods, spans 400 metres in length, which astonishingly equates to five full-sized football pitches. This extensive space promises optimal storage solutions for both unitised and non-unitised commodities, underscoring the scale and versatility of the warehouse.
The construction involved the strategic installation of 6,500 piles and 729 precast panel components, cumulatively weighing over 4,800 tonnes. An impressive 40,000 cubic metres of concrete have been poured to bolster the structural integrity of the building. These elements are a testament to the project’s ambitious scope and engineering precision.
The Alexandra Dock Multi-User Warehouse is not just a storage facility but a strategic logistical asset. It features state-of-the-art equipment including advanced cranes for efficient vessel unloading and infrastructure promoting rapid HGV turnaround. The facility also includes dedicated wash bays, separate operations blocks, and comprehensive welfare facilities.
Pete Goodman, Glencar’s managing director for the Midlands and North, remarked on the strategic importance of such developments, stating that ports are crucial to the UK’s supply chain, and facilities like these aid in the seamless import and export of goods. He highlighted the reduction in road miles and improvements in cost and carbon efficiency as critical outcomes of the project.
Phil Hall, director at Peel Ports Group Mersey, echoed these sentiments by highlighting the demand for premium warehousing at this strategically located hub.
