Vernon Building Society is set to undergo a significant change in leadership as Chief Executive Steve Fletcher prepares for his retirement in December 2024. Fletcher’s tenure, beginning in January 2018, has seen the society through a period of modernisation and notable milestones, including the celebration of the organisation’s centennial.
Fletcher departs after a distinguished 43-year career in financial services. During his time with Vernon, he led a £1.2m modernisation programme of their branch network. Despite economic challenges, Fletcher maintained strong business performance, ensuring the society’s stability and growth.
Fletcher expressed his confidence in the future of the organisation, highlighting the development of a robust working environment and a culture that empowers colleagues. He remarked, “I’m delighted to be leaving members, colleagues and the community an ambitious and modern organisation which can robustly adapt to the fast-changing external environment.”
Darren Ditchburn will assume the role of Chief Executive, bringing with him two decades of experience within building societies, most recently as the Deputy Chief Executive at Leek Building Society. His previous roles at Darlington Building Society have furnished him with extensive experience in customer service, operations, and risk management.
Ditchburn spoke highly of Fletcher’s contributions, stating, “Steve leaves behind a brilliant legacy and I am incredibly proud to be joining Vernon Building Society as Chief Executive at such an exciting time.” His focus will be on supporting members during challenging economic conditions, including high inflation and rising interest rates.
Ditchburn plans to uphold the society’s commitment to its members and local communities, emphasising personal service and understanding. As he notes, “Building societies enable home ownership and encourage healthy savings, which are some of the biggest life goals people have.”
This leadership transition at Vernon Building Society signifies a continued commitment to member support and community engagement amidst evolving economic landscapes.
