Primark has joined forces with WRAP to advance sustainable fashion initiatives.
- The partnership spans three years, focusing on extending clothing life to reduce textile waste.
- Primark and WRAP aim to improve awareness and effectiveness of clothing donation schemes.
- They will address consumer habits and motivations impacting clothing disposal at high street stores.
- Research by WRAP highlights significant unused clothing in UK wardrobes, underpinning this initiative.
Primark has engaged in a meaningful collaboration with WRAP, a prominent environmental action charity, to promote sustainable fashion by ensuring that clothing remains in circulation for an extended period. The three-year partnership aims to discover innovative solutions to minimise textile waste, a pressing concern in the fashion industry.
Launched as part of this collaboration, Behaviour Change, an NGO subsidiary of WRAP, will provide their behavioural science expertise alongside Primark’s takeback partner, Yellow Octopus, serving as an advisory. Their combined efforts will delve into the barriers and motivations regarding the donation of quality used clothing, particularly to high street fashion retailers like Primark.
Lynne Walker, Director of Primark Cares, expressed the brand’s dedication to circular business practices through the Primark Cares strategy. According to her, this partnership is crucial in advancing their understanding of how clothing longevity can be achieved, thus significantly diminishing textile waste.
WRAP’s research underscores the critical need for this initiative, revealing that around 1.6 billion clothing items remain unused across wardrobes in the UK. Furthermore, nearly half of all used textiles end up in general waste, emphasizing the gaps in current clothing disposal knowledge. Despite Primark’s takeback scheme ranking as the fifth most utilised in the UK, only 22% of survey respondents had participated in any such initiative.
Catherine David from WRAP emphasized their mission to proliferate circular living both at an industry and household level, with an ambitious goal of halving the carbon footprint of the textiles industry by 2030. This commitment aligns with Primark’s goals, marking a notable stride in integrating circular principles in fashion retail.
Primark’s collaboration with WRAP is not unprecedented. In 2016, Primark became a part of WRAP’s Sustainable Clothing Action Plan and played a foundational role in the Textiles 2030 initiative. With the development of the Primark Cares strategy and Circular Product Standard, the retailer has set an ambitious path toward sustainability.
This partnership between Primark and WRAP is poised to substantially impact sustainable fashion by embedding circular practices into mainstream retail.
