Iceland has launched an age restriction policy on two of its newly developed ready meals, marking a significant first in the UK retail market. The meals, namely Pepper X Chicken Tikka Masala and Pepper X Chilli Mac & Cheese, utilise the infamous Pepper X chilli, which holds the title as the world’s hottest. This chilli was meticulously cultivated by Ed Currie, the same innovator behind the equally formidable Carolina Reaper.
Reportedly, Pepper X reaches a staggering 2.69 million Scoville heat units, rendering it 53,760% hotter than a standard jalapeño. This extreme heat necessitates a bold yet responsible move by Iceland, which now requires customers to show identification proving they are over 18 to purchase these meals. Each meal comes with a price tag of £4, reflecting both the unique nature of the ingredients and the culinary challenge they pose.
Matthew Worsley, head development chef at Iceland, stated, “Our customers love spice, and they are always pushing us to turn up the heat! So, this time we have developed a range that will not disappoint. Our Pepper X range is unlike anything we’ve ever offered to our customers before. It’s intense, it’s fiery and it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted.” By instituting this age restriction, Iceland aims to ensure that only those who are truly prepared for the intense heat can partake in consuming these extraordinary dishes.
This strategic product launch coincides with Iceland’s unveiling of its most expansive Halloween range to date, offering a staggering 118 products. This represents a 298% increase from the previous year, highlighting the retailer’s ambitious expansion into thematic and seasonal offerings.
Iceland’s innovative approach sets a new standard in the UK’s ready meal market with its age-restricted spicy dishes.
