Morrisons, a leading supermarket chain, has unveiled a new range of white eggs as part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability and farmer support. The introduction of white eggs is an extension of the supermarket’s ‘For Farmers’ initiative, allowing consumers to indirectly contribute to the agricultural sector. For every pack of six white eggs purchased, 6p is allocated to farmers, ensuring that they receive direct financial aid. This initiative is particularly significant in the current market, where sustainability and ethical sourcing are high priorities for consumers.
Nutritionally, white eggs are identical to their brown counterparts. The primary distinction lies in the colour of the shell, which is determined by the breed of hens laying the eggs. White hens, responsible for these eggs, are more feed-efficient compared to their brown counterparts, requiring less feed to produce the same quantity of eggs. This efficiency translates to a reduced carbon footprint, positioning these eggs as a more environmentally friendly option for consumers.
Morrisons has emphasised that the hens supplying the white eggs enjoy outdoor access, including dedicated woodland ranges and bee-friendly flower strips. Through the ‘For Farmers’ initiative, which began in 2015, over £25 million has been distributed to farmers, proving the success and impact of such programmes. Morrisons collaborates with more than 65 egg farmers, promoting British farming standards, including the British Lion Code and RSPCA approvals.
These efforts are further supported by long-term contracts and swift financial transactions, providing farmers with economic stability and the confidence to invest in their operations. Additionally, Morrisons offers carbon footprint analysis for each flock, helping farmers develop customised sustainable growth plans.
