Recent data shows a significant increase in UK Christmas bookings for 2024.
- Bookings for Christmas 2024 have surged by 54% compared to 2023.
- Over half of these bookings are for Christmas Day, indicating a growing preference for on-the-day celebrations.
- Group bookings, especially those for ten or more people, have increased by 38%.
- The hospitality sector is advised to prepare for this busy period with enhanced booking systems.
In a notable shift influenced perhaps by the disappointing summer weather, British consumers appear to be planning their Christmas celebrations much earlier this year. According to recent insights from Zonal, a prominent hospitality technology partner, bookings for Christmas 2024 have increased by an impressive 54% compared to the same period in 2023. This trend indicates a robust festive season ahead for the hospitality industry.
More than half of the current reservations, precisely 52%, have been made for Christmas Day itself. This is a significant rise from 44% at the same time last year, reflecting a growing preference for celebrating on the day. Furthermore, Saturday 14th December 2024 has emerged as the most popular day for festive bookings, closely followed by Saturday 7th December.
In terms of group bookings, which are defined as reservations for ten or more people, there is a notable 38% increase year-on-year. These group bookings currently account for 26% of all reservations for December 2024. This uptick suggests that communal celebrations are gaining traction, potentially driven by the post-pandemic desire for social gatherings.
Tim Chapman, Chief Commercial Officer at Zonal, commented on these findings, stating, “Our insights show that Christmas 2024 is already looking positive for hospitality – with bookings up on this time last year. With group bookings looking to be particularly popular, there is even more reason for operators to celebrate, but to also get prepared.”
Chapman further emphasised the importance of having a robust booking system to manage large party enquiries and pre-orders, which can significantly reduce administrative challenges while providing operators with comprehensive control during this peak season.
The early surge in Christmas bookings signals a promising festive season for the UK hospitality industry.
