High street value retailer Primark is set to significantly expand its presence in Portugal with a substantial investment of €40 million, equivalent to £34 million. This strategic initiative is aimed at extending its retail space across Lisbon and launching four additional stores. This expansion marks a pivotal step in Primark’s operations, coinciding with its 15th anniversary in Portugal. The company, which currently operates ten stores across the nation, is preparing to increase its footprint to 14 stores, an enhancement that will boost its selling space by more than 30%.
The retailer’s growth strategy includes opening new stores in key locations such as Allegro shopping centre in Montijo, Centro Comercial Espaço in Guimaraes, Palácio Do Gelo shopping centre in Viseu, and Covilha City Center Retail Park in Covilhã. Notably, these new outlets will be pioneering the introduction of self-service checkout systems in Portugal, reflecting a modernisation in Primark’s retail approach. Furthermore, the extension of its Colombo store in Lisbon, scheduled to open on 21 June, will unveil a refreshed appearance and a more extensive range of fashion, beauty, and homeware products.
Nelson Ribeiro, the head of sales for Primark Portugal, highlighted the pivotal role of their retail staff, acknowledging their contribution as key ambassadors in fostering the brand’s popularity within Portugal. Ribeiro expressed enthusiasm for the ongoing growth and investment in new stores, which will significantly enhance job opportunities and further introduce Portuguese consumers to the brand’s diverse style and value offerings.
