Harrods has taken a significant step in its sustainability journey by publishing its first annual Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report. This comprehensive document covers activities and achievements from February 2023 to January 2024.
A focal point of the report is the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2.4% from 2022 figures for Scope 1 and 2 emissions, indicating a measurable step towards decarbonisation. This is complemented by the installation of solar panels at the company’s Thames Valley distribution centre, which now contributes approximately 41% of the facility’s annual energy requirement, underscoring Harrods’ commitment to renewable energy sources.
Moreover, Harrods has launched a beauty recycling scheme aimed at reducing waste and promoting circularity within its operations. This initiative is designed to encourage customers to participate in sustainability efforts, enhancing the store’s role as a sustainable luxury retailer.
Another strategic measure detailed in the report is the introduction of the Community Pillar strategy. This initiative aims to empower global communities by collaborating with various charity partners, reflecting Harrods’ dedication to social responsibility alongside environmental causes.
Michael Ward, managing director at Harrods, highlighted the importance of these developments by stating, “We recognise that it is only by putting the sustainability of our business, our supply chain and the planet at the forefront of our business, that we can assure the continuing high standards that we have always stood for and that our customers expected.” This acknowledgment signifies Harrods’ realistic view of the challenges ahead, despite celebrating this milestone achievement.
Harrods’ inaugural ESG report represents a promising start in its ongoing commitment to sustainability, while recognising the need for continued progress.
