- Speakers at the Clia RiverView conference highlight a surge in demand for river cruises.
- Data shows an increase in willingness among UK adults to travel abroad.
- Industry leaders urge travel agents to seize opportunities in the booming cruise sector.
- The river cruise sector is leveraging its unique value proposition to attract more discerning travellers.
The river cruise sector is poised for a ‘pivotal year’ in 2024, as it experiences a ‘tangible resurgence’ following the pandemic, according to the chair of Clia’s river cruise working group. This optimistic outlook was shared during the Clia RiverView conference in Amsterdam, attended by 540 delegates, where industry leaders discussed the sector’s recovery trajectory.
According to Amawaterways managing director Jamie Loizou, recent data from Mintel indicates that 51% of UK adults are likely to book a holiday abroad this year, a noticeable increase from 43% the previous year. This resurgence in travel interest is seen as a promising sign for the river cruise industry, which offers ‘small ships which equals big opportunities.’
Loizou pointed out that the demand for river cruising had been slower to bounce back compared to other segments within the cruise industry. However, the situation has improved, culminating in increased sales. He emphasised that the value proposition of river cruises, emphasising quality service and diverse destinations, is a driving force in attracting the modern, discerning traveller.
He further encouraged travel agents to capitalise on this renewed interest by integrating more river cruise bookings into their offerings. Loizou presented a strategic challenge to agents at the conference, advising them to commit to making four new bookings by the end of the month.
The managing director also advised agents to critically evaluate potential partnerships with river cruise lines, posing three essential questions. These questions aimed to ensure alignment with client demographics, preferred destinations, and the support available from cruise lines to agents.
The river cruise industry’s potential for growth in 2024 hinges upon strategic engagement by agents to maximise the opportunities presented by rising consumer interest.
