XPO Logistics has upheld its long-standing association with the Tour de France, proudly taking on the role of Official Transport Partner for the 44th year in succession. A dedicated team of 59 experienced drivers will handle the transport of crucial equipment necessary for each stage of the event, including infrastructure such as barriers, podiums, and sound systems. This logistical achievement underscores XPO’s operational proficiency and commitment to large-scale sporting events.
A focal point of XPO’s strategy is the LESS HVO solution, introduced in 2023. This sustainable approach utilises HVO biofuel, which dramatically reduces CO2 emissions by up to 90% while also decreasing fine particle and NOx pollution by as much as 30% compared to traditional diesel options. In a practical demonstration of its environmental efficacy, the 2023 Tour de France saw a reduction of 136,571 kg of CO2 emissions through the use of just 48,826 litres of this biofuel.
Adding to their environmentally-conscious initiatives, the women’s edition of the race, Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, contributed to this reduction with 18,976 kg fewer CO2 emissions thanks to 6,784 litres of HVO biofuel. XPO’s commitment to sustainable transport solutions is further exemplified by the introduction of a fully electric road tractor, set to journey from Mâcon to Nuits-Saint-Georges, culminating in an appearance at the event’s conclusion in Saint-Vulbas.
Since 2021, XPO has been actively testing B100 biofuel made from rapeseed oil at the Tour de France. The progressive integration of such sustainable practices into their operations signifies a firm dedication to eco-friendly development. These efforts are complemented by additional measures such as eco-driving training for drivers and utilising uniforms crafted from organic materials, further ingraining eco-conscious practices into their operational framework.
Luis Gómez, president of XPO Logistics in Europe, poignantly captured the spirit of the company’s mission: “Bringing our expertise to manage the transport and logistics of one of the world’s greatest sporting competitions means offering more innovative and sustainable solutions each year. This is part of our overall commitment to limiting CO2 emissions and helping our customers and partners to achieve their objectives for a more environmentally friendly future.” The 2024 Tour, notably concluding in Nice due to its alignment with the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics, is a testament to XPO’s forward-thinking planning.
XPO’s persistent drive towards sustainability cements its role as an innovator in eco-friendly logistics at the Tour de France.
