This month marks a pivotal step in sustainable logistics as United Pallet Network (UPN) transitions to carbon neutral deliveries.
- UPN, in collaboration with Carbon Neutral Britain (CNB), aims to neutralise its environmental impact through a comprehensive carbon offsetting initiative.
- Each member of the UPN network will receive carbon neutral certification, validating their commitment to reducing emissions.
- The scheme employs globally recognised standards and supports projects in the developing world to ensure robust environmental benefits.
- UPN’s proactive approach aims to inspire other networks to follow suit, thereby enhancing the sector’s overall sustainability.
United Pallet Network (UPN) has embarked on a significant journey towards sustainability, announcing that all deliveries from this point forward will be carbon neutral. This initiative is administered in partnership with Carbon Neutral Britain (CNB). UPN members will now carry a badge of carbon neutrality, a certification provided by CNB, validating the eco-friendly efforts of each member within the network.
The carbon footprint of UPN’s operations will be calculated and offset using the respected ISO 14064 and GHG Emissions Protocol standards. These internationally acclaimed methods are widely utilised for accurate carbon accounting and are endorsed by government entities across the UK. With CNB’s third-party assurance, the emissions data will demonstrate how UPN has compensated for its environmental impact.
Projects funded by CNB extend across the developing world, addressing key areas such as education, employment, and clean energy, while also contributing positively to local wildlife and ecology. These efforts are verified by the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), Gold Standard Voluntary Emission Reductions (VER), and United Nations Certified Emission Reductions (CER) programmes, ensuring authenticity and effectiveness.
In a statement from David Brown, UPN’s Managing Director, he emphasised the organisation’s proactive measures in reducing emissions in real-time per financial quarter. “UPN, as a leading entity in sustainable logistics, is fully committed to reducing our carbon footprint through upfront investments in offsetting programmes,” he said, acknowledging the inherent emissions of logistical operations while aiming to mitigate them.
UPN’s operations already exhibit a high vehicle fill rate, surpassing industry averages, which inherently reduces the number of vehicles on the road. Brown highlighted the moral obligation of UPN staff and partners to protect the planet.“By leading this initiative, we hope to pave the way for other networks to also achieve carbon neutrality, thus collectively enhancing the sustainability of our sector,” he added.
This landmark initiative by UPN sets a strong precedent for sustainability in the logistics sector.
