- The campaign aims to foster discussions around mental health within the industry.
In an effort to address growing mental health concerns, Abta LifeLine has partnered with Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) to introduce the Walk for Wellness initiative in the UK. This wellness campaign, which has been a success in Australia since its inception in 2020, encourages travel agents to enhance their well-being by engaging with nature and networking more with peers over a set period.
Set to run from May 1 to May 31, the Walk for Wellness programme challenges travel agents across the UK to collectively walk 40,000 miles. This ambitious target, if met, will result in NCL donating £10,000 directly to Abta LifeLine, a charity focused on supporting travel professionals. Participants are encouraged to utilise the MoveSpring app to track their progress, with additional features offering opportunities to connect and communicate with fellow agents.
NCL’s regional vice-president and head of UK and Ireland, Gary Anslow, expressed enthusiasm for bringing the scheme to British shores. He highlighted the scheme’s potential to spark important conversations regarding mental health, remarking on the pressures within the travel industry. ‘We want to give agents the opportunity to think about their own mental health by getting out in fresh air and connecting with other agents in their area,’ Anslow stated, emphasising the potential positive impacts of such interactions.
Trudie Clements, director of Abta LifeLine, noted the significant increase in demand for the charity’s services over recent years. She underscored the importance of the Walk for Wellness initiative, referring to financial pressures and their link to poor mental health. ‘Mental health was talked about a lot during the pandemic, but the focus has shifted away from it, which is why this is such an important initiative,’ Clements articulated. The ongoing economic challenges following events like the Thomas Cook collapse and the COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated such issues, requiring a proactive approach.
Adding an element of excitement, NCL pledged an incentive scheme as part of the initiative. Throughout May, participants will have a chance to win one of four cruises for two on the forthcoming Norwegian Aqua, with weekly draws keeping the spirits high among participants. This incentive adds a competitive yet engaging layer to the initiative, potentially boosting participation and fostering camaraderie among agents.
The Walk for Wellness initiative represents a significant step in promoting mental well-being in the travel industry, highlighting the importance of community and support.
