The UK cruise industry is on the verge of a remarkable resurgence, with experts forecasting an impressive growth for the 2023 season. Cruise Britain has unveiled figures indicating the most robust foundation for this projected expansion as the industry emerges from its post-pandemic transition period. The anticipated eight per cent rise in port calls across the UK underscores this optimistic outlook.
In 2022, 1.04 million passengers embarked on cruises from UK ports, constituting a substantial recovery to 94 per cent of the figures recorded in 2019. Despite a downturn in the number of cruise calls in 2022 compared to pre-pandemic levels, the sector has demonstrated resilience with substantial progress in reversing the decline.
The extensive network of 58 UK cruise ports facilitated the embarkation and arrival of passengers on 107 different ships last year. This network was instrumental in supporting the return of 52 distinct cruise lines, all of which contributed to the industry’s robust recovery. The strategic efforts of these ports and lines have been pivotal in re-establishing the UK as a prominent cruise destination.
Ian McQuade, the chair of Cruise Britain, highlighted the exceptional success of the UK’s cruise industry in 2022, the first full year of activity since the onset of the pandemic. According to McQuade, this success thanks in no small part to the collaborative efforts across the sector, lays the groundwork for a projected eight per cent growth in port calls for the upcoming season. His insights reflect a broader confidence in the growing allure of Britain as a cruise destination.
The increasing appeal of itineraries that incorporate UK port calls within broader multi-country tours indicates a shift in traveller preferences, boosting the popularity of these routes. The diverse range of available ports can accommodate all types of cruise vessels, from expedition ships to the largest afloat, enhancing the UK’s reputation as a versatile and attractive cruise destination.
The UK cruise sector is poised for unprecedented growth, fuelled by a resilient recovery and increasing demand for diverse itineraries.
