TV presenter and former wheelchair basketball professional, Ade Adepitan, has joined efforts to enhance accessibility in Spain’s tourism sector. As an ambassador for the ‘Spain for All’ initiative, Adepitan shared his personal experiences of travelling through Spain as a wheelchair user and offered consultancy services to the Spanish Tourist Office. His involvement exemplifies a strong commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in travel.
The Spanish Tourist Office in the UK hosted its inaugural advisory panel on accessibility, moderated by Angus Drummond, the founder of Limitless Travel. Diagnosed with muscular dystrophy in his early twenties, Drummond transitioned from investment banking to establish a company that now facilitates accessible and inclusive holidays for hundreds annually. His moderation underscored a focus on changing mindsets and seeking solutions, rather than merely highlighting problems in the accessibility saga.
This first session was the beginning of a three-part series aimed at drawing insights from various experts, as articulated by Manuel Butler, director of the Spanish Tourist Office in the UK. Butler emphasised the importance of learning from accessibility experts and those with lived experiences to develop a comprehensive strategy for Spain. He stated, “Spain aspires to be a welcoming destination with high-quality services that consider universal accessibility, and listening to experts is a key step along this journey.”
The panel comprised a diverse group of figures from the travel and accessibility sectors, including Angus Drummond from Limitless Travel, Atlyn Forde of Communicate Inclusively, and Ben Kirby from Enable Holidays, among others. These members bring a wide array of expertise aimed at advising on best practices and novel strategies to enhance accessibility in Spain. The initiative indicates Spain’s forward-thinking approach towards creating an inclusive environment for all tourists, including those with disabilities.
The advisory panel marks a pivotal step towards a more accessible and inclusive tourism landscape in Spain.
