Recent developments have placed the spotlight on the support needed for SME travel executives battling loneliness and burnout. Former Focus Travel Partnership chief Abby Penston launches Myexec to offer tailored mentoring and coaching from November. Studies highlight that 61% of executives experience loneliness, impacting decision-making and organisational performance. Deloitte’s research underscores the risk of burnout without adequate support systems. Penston aims to impart her expertise, drawn from her experience as a former CEO, to help leaders navigate these challenges.
In a significant move aimed at addressing the often-unspoken challenges faced by senior managers in the travel sector, Abby Penston, the former chief of Focus Travel Partnership, has initiated efforts to mitigate the feelings of loneliness and burnout that frequently accompany leadership roles in small and medium-sized enterprises. Through a newly established executive coaching practice named Myexec, launching in November, Penston seeks to provide much-needed support to C-suite executives within the travel industry.
The establishment of Myexec comes against the backdrop of a revealing study from the Harvard Business Review, which found that a staggering 61% of executives report feelings of loneliness in their roles. This emotional isolation is not without consequence; it has been shown to adversely affect critical aspects such as decision-making processes, conflict resolution, and team dynamics, ultimately impacting the overall performance of organisations.
Furthermore, research conducted by the Centre for Creative Leadership reiterates these findings, suggesting that executives dealing with high levels of loneliness are at a higher risk of experiencing difficulties in managing team operations effectively. In a related analysis by Deloitte, it is indicated that leaders who feel isolated are significantly more susceptible to burnout, with 77% acknowledging the necessity of better support systems to manage these pressures.
Abby Penston emphasises the importance of addressing these issues, drawing on her personal experiences as a former CEO. She acknowledges that the path of leadership in the SME travel business can often be overwhelming and isolating. Penston states, “Being a leader or senior manager in an SME travel business can often feel a lonely role and can seem overwhelming at times.”
Her advocacy for executive coaching is supported by the observation that some of the most successful and influential business figures globally have benefited from senior-level coaching and mentoring. “If you look to most successful business organisations around the world, and at the most powerful, innovative and influential business leaders, the vast majority have benefitted from senior level coaching and mentoring,” Penston adds. Her approach is rooted in a genuine passion for passing on the techniques and strategies she has found effective in managing leadership pressures.
The initiative by Abby Penston underscores the crucial need for support systems in leadership roles to mitigate loneliness and burnout.
