Ferry operator Stena has finalised its acquisition of NTEX, Sweden’s prominent transport and logistics firm. Stena’s strategy to acquire full control is aimed at gaining an in-depth understanding of logistics dynamics in varied markets. With this move, the ferry operator has secured the remaining 25% stake in NTEX, adding to the 75% it acquired in 2020.
NTEX stands out with an impressive infrastructure, operating 20 depots across 12 nations, including five in the United Kingdom. Its operations in the UK are robust, boasting licences for a fleet of 160 trucks and 90 trailers. The company’s expansion in the UK was marked by significant developments such as the acquisition of Bristol-based Sureway Express Transport in 2022 and the establishment of a depot in Nottingham in January last year, both indicative of its growth ambitions.
Chief Executive of Stena Line and Chairman of NTEX, Niclas Mårtensson, highlighted the strategic intent behind the acquisition. He asserted that by owning and operating logistics entities, Stena aspires to enhance its understanding of large-scale transport company operations across different regions. This broader comprehension is anticipated to refine Stena’s product portfolio, aligning it more closely with market trends and customer needs.
Thomas Ström, the founder and CEO of NTEX, expressed mixed feelings about the deal, acknowledging his deep appreciation for the employees who have been pivotal in NTEX’s success. He lauded their contributions, recognising them as a cornerstone of the achievements that have defined NTEX over the years. NTEX, with an annual turnover of approximately £286 million, employs over 1,000 staff and manages a fleet of about 1,500 trucks, specialising in warehousing and international distribution.
NTEX’s operational strategy is defined by its extensive and strategic reach. The company’s UK presence is anchored by depots in Bristol, Glasgow, Grimsby, Immingham, and Nottingham. Emphasising the strategic importance of its newest Nottingham branch, NTEX CEO Thomas Ström remarked on Nottingham’s central location in the UK, which facilitates an efficient and comprehensive range of services for clients.
Stena’s acquisition of NTEX underscores its strategic initiative to deepen market insight and optimise logistics solutions.
