Royal Dutch Shell PLC has announced it plans to launch a proof-of-concept project that will deploy AI-enabled drones to inspect equipment at the Shell Technology Center in Houston, Texas, the company said.
Shell´s drones will use cameras and sensors to gather images of the Houston facility and consolidate the data into a cloud-based platform that runs on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
The drones are manufactured by Kespry Inc., a company that Shell invested in.
After the pilot program is complete, Shell said it will decide whether to scale the system beyond the Houston facility.
