Sainsbury’s is proactively preparing for the festive period by announcing a significant recruitment drive.
- The supermarket giant plans to hire 20,000 temporary staff across its various operational areas.
- This recruitment effort will support both Sainsbury’s and its subsidiary Argos during the high-demand Christmas season.
- Hired personnel will benefit from incentives such as free meals during shifts and exclusive employee discounts.
- M&S has similarly increased its workforce by 11,000 in anticipation of the festive rush.
Sainsbury’s has launched a substantial recruitment initiative to manage the expected increase in customer demand during the festive season. This initiative involves hiring 20,000 temporary workers who will be integrated into different facets of the company’s operations, including stores, warehouses, and online fulfilment centres. Of these new hires, 18,000 staff will be allocated to Sainsbury’s itself, while Argos, its subsidiary, will absorb the remaining 2,000.
The plan involves fixed-term contracts lasting between three to twelve weeks, offering a flexible employment option to cater to the increased holiday demands. As part of its recruitment strategy, Sainsbury’s is providing attractive benefits to its temporary employees. These include complimentary meals during working hours and a standard 10% staff discount, which will increase to 15% on selected days for eligible employees, thereby enhancing the incentive to join their seasonal workforce.
Prerana Issar, the Chief People Officer at Sainsbury’s, emphasised the critical role of colleagues in delivering a memorable Christmas experience for customers. Issar remarked, “As the festive season draws near, we’re getting ready to create a memorable Christmas for our customers – and our brilliant colleagues play a central role in bringing this to life.” Issar also highlighted the opportunity for new and returning staff to gain skills that extend beyond the temporary engagement.
In parallel, other major retailers are also scaling up their resources in preparation for anticipated seasonal demand. M&S, another leading UK retailer, has announced the hiring of 11,000 seasonal workers, marking an increase from the previous year. This trend signifies a broader industry movement to bolster workforces in light of the festive season rush.
Sainsbury’s and other retailers are strategically increasing their workforce to ensure smooth operations and customer satisfaction during the festive season.
