Rockwool Group, a Denmark-based multinational known for its insulation products, has successfully acquired Wetherby Building Systems, a significant external insulation manufacturer headquartered in Wigan. This strategic move aims to bolster Rockwool’s footprint in the UK construction market, particularly focusing on advancing sustainable and non-combustible facade solutions. This acquisition reflects Rockwool’s commitment to expanding its market presence and transforming the construction sector.
Rockwool’s Chief Executive, Jes Munk Hansen, highlighted that the integration of Wetherby into the Rockwool family is not just an expansion tactic but a commitment to evolving Wetherby’s product line. Gradually, Wetherby’s offerings will shift wholly to a stone wool-based portfolio, which aligns with Rockwool’s sustainable practices seen in other regions. Hansen stated, “The share of stone wool insulation in the Wetherby business has been growing steadily.”
While the financial specifics of the deal have not been publicly disclosed, Wetherby Building Systems reported a turnover of £47.6 million with a pre-tax profit of £9.8 million for the year ending 31 October 2023. The company, which employs 78 individuals, holds a book value of £20.3 million. This acquisition signals a promising future for both businesses.
Wetherby’s Managing Director, Bob Deane, emphasised the strong alignment between Wetherby and Rockwool in terms of business models, technology, and values. Deane expressed optimism about reaching the company’s full potential under Rockwool’s larger organisational umbrella. He stated, “There is a long-standing relationship between Wetherby and Rockwool, and the match is strong on all significant drivers.”
Wetherby will continue to operate existing relationships with developers, customers, and suppliers within its network. Furthermore, this acquisition aligns Wetherby with other companies within the Rockwool Group, such as Heck Wall Systems in Germany and Fast Wall Systems in Poland, providing an opportunity to share expertise and resources.
The acquisition of Wetherby by Rockwool Group marks a significant step in enhancing sustainable insulation solutions in the UK market.
