Interest in river and expedition cruises has reached new heights, as revealed by Andy Harmer, Managing Director of CLIA UK and Ireland. In a strategic response to this growing trend, CLIA is introducing two comprehensive training programmes. Harmer states the goal is to arm agents with the necessary expertise to capitalise on the increasing demand.
These programmes will enrol two groups of 30 participants each, specifically targeting agents who are either new or have limited experience in the cruise sector. Over six months, participants will engage in a structured learning agenda that includes classroom training, monthly webinars, and digital discussions. The aim is to furnish agents with insights into destination and product training, sales techniques, and strategies to identify the ideal clientele for these niche markets.
Upon completion, participants will be honoured in a formal graduation ceremony and awarded a unique certification recognising them as ‘Cruise Champions’. This accolade not only enhances their professional standing but also positions them as valued resources for both customers and colleagues.
The development of these programmes is a collaborative effort between CLIA and its associated river and expedition cruise line operators. Harmer expressed gratitude for the operators’ support in crafting courses that provide a well-rounded educational experience. As part of the programme, agents will need to commit to several learning hours each month, fostering a deep understanding of the sector’s intricacies.
The training is set to commence in November, following an initial full-day classroom session. Interested agents will be required to register, with applications opening after the CLIA Cruise Week occurring from 16 to 22 September. This initiative underscores CLIA’s commitment to equipping agents with the necessary knowledge and skills to thrive in the growing expedition and river cruise markets.
These training initiatives represent a forward-thinking step by CLIA to proactively adapt to and lead in the evolving cruise industry.
