In a year of unprecedented achievements, the cruising industry in the UK and Ireland marked a significant upturn in 2023, as documented by the latest CLIA findings. British and Irish holidaymakers made 2.3 million cruise expeditions last year, surpassing any previous annual figure by an impressive margin of over 600,000 individuals. This surge denotes a robust recovery and heightened interest in cruising post-pandemic.
Dominating as the destination of choice, the Mediterranean attracted 35% of cruisers, affirming its enduring appeal amongst holidaymakers. Northern Europe followed, welcoming 29% of UK and Irish passengers, while the Caribbean drew 12%, showcasing diverse travel preferences within the cruising community.
There was a noticeable shift in passenger demographics. The average age of those embarking on cruises dropped to 55.1 years in 2023 from 56.1 in 2022, indicating a growing interest among younger travellers. Additionally, cruises saw extensive family participation, with 28% of travellers embarking as part of multigenerational groups, comprising three or more generations.
Additional insights from a survey encompassing 4,500 international travellers disclosed a potent enthusiasm towards cruising. Notably, 65% of passengers opted for a pre-cruise stay, and 52% extended their journey post-cruise, reflecting an inclination towards immersive travel experiences. Moreover, 82% of cruisers expressed an intention to holiday at sea again, with an increase compared to previous years.
Supporting this burgeoning interest, it was disclosed that over 300 ships are scheduled to traverse seas within the current year for the first time, an expansion illustrating the cruise industry’s steady growth. CLIA UK’s Managing Director, Andy Harmer, aptly highlighted the broad appeal of cruises, stating, “A holiday at sea offers something to suit all tastes and budgets, both on and off the ship.”
