As devastating forest fires rage across central and northern Portugal, the government has issued a travel warning to caution potential visitors about the ongoing crisis. The widespread fires have already claimed four lives and inflicted injuries on more than 40 individuals, with a significant proportion of the injured being firefighters actively battling the blazes.
The Prime Minister of Portugal, Luis Montenegro, publicly acknowledged the formidable support provided by France, Greece, Italy, and Spain. He conveyed his gratitude through social media, recognising their rapid and crucial interventions in aiding Portugal’s efforts to contain the catastrophic fires.
Residents in regions such as the northern Aveiro area have been forced to evacuate, with the fires damaging homes and resulting in road closures. The Albergaria-a-Velha outskirts have been particularly affected, where several houses were consumed by the flames, underscoring the relentless nature of the fire’s reach.
A red alert status, maintained by national civil protection commander Andre Fernandes, remains in effect as a precautionary measure against the precarious situation.
