P&O Cruises and Cunard, subsidiaries of Carnival Corporation, have achieved an impressive milestone by completing their 10th beach clean-up for the year 2024. This initiative underscores the companies’ proactive role in promoting sustainability and protecting marine environments.
These clean-ups have been carried out since March and have included five efforts near their UK head office in Southampton, specifically targeting areas such as Calshot and Netley Abbey beach. The combined efforts have resulted in the removal of over 170kg of waste, which included unexpected items like a fridge, various clothing articles, and numerous traffic cones.
Notably, the clean-ups were not limited to the UK alone. Ship and shoreside colleagues extended their environmental duties across various coastlines around the world, including locations as diverse as Lisbon, St. Kitts, Norway, and Malta. Altogether, the teams have cleaned a substantial area of 190,500 square metres throughout the year.
Most recently, a partnership with Blue Flag saw crew members from P&O Cruises Britannia and Cunard’s Queen Anne undertake important coastal cleaning activities in Lisbon, one of the most frequently visited ports by these lines. They successfully removed 42kg of rubbish from two beach sections in Algés. This collaboration marks a significant step in aligning with international standards for coastal cleanliness and sustainable tourism practices.
President of Carnival UK & P&O Cruises, Paul Ludlow, expressed pride in the contribution of their employees, highlighting the importance of sustainable tourism. He stated, “We’ve taken great pride in orchestrating the beach cleans along our UK coastlines close to our Southampton home, with so many of our passionate colleagues contributing their time to this important cause.”
In addition to environmental initiatives, P&O Cruises demonstrated social responsibility by redirecting funds meant for promotional merchandise to a charity. Recently, they donated £10,000 to the Teenage Cancer Trust, showcasing an organisational shift towards supporting meaningful causes over conventional marketing campaigns.
The sustained commitment by P&O Cruises and Cunard to environmental and social responsibility continues to set an exemplary standard within the industry.
