Plymouth’s cruise industry has provided a substantial boost to the local economy, bringing in an additional £1.5 million this year. This increase is attributed to a doubling in cruise bookings compared to the previous year. According to data, the average cruise visitor spends about £90, significantly benefitting the city’s economy, including port and pilotage fees, as well as expenditure on excursions.
Amanda Lumley, Chief Executive of Destination Plymouth, remarked on the economic impact, describing it as a “fantastic boost” for the local economy. According to her, the influx of passengers and crew has invigorated local businesses, with spending seen across a range of services and amenities, including attractions, tours, retail shops, cafes, and restaurants. Such spending is crucial for maintaining and enhancing the vibrancy of Plymouth’s economy.
In the year 2022, Plymouth accommodated seven cruise ships. This year marks a considerable increase with the city preparing to receive 14 vessels, potentially bringing in 10,500 passengers along with over 5,000 crew members. The upcoming year already has ten vessels confirmed, with four more anticipated, signalling continued growth for the port.
Earlier in the year, the port announced its readiness to host upwards of 10,000 cruise passengers due to a 40% increase in bookings from the previous year. Among the 14 confirmed vessels are several first-time visitors to the port, as well as multiple expedition vessels, highlighting the port’s expanding appeal and capacity. Notably, the Ambassador Cruise Line made a debut with its ships Ambition and Ambience, joining a roster of expedition vessels such as Seabourn Venture, Exploris One, Star Legend, and Le Dumont D’Urville.
Such growth in the cruise industry underscores Plymouth’s rising status as a key destination for maritime tourism.
