ALT Legal, headquartered in Wetherby, has recently welcomed two notable additions to its team, Heather Robertson and Alex Cooper, each bringing unique skills to their roles. The firm has reinforced its reputation for innovative legal solutions by hiring these professionals with diverse backgrounds.
Alex Cooper, originally a pharmacology student, diverged from traditional paths to establish himself as a corporate lawyer. He joins ALT Legal from Clarion, drawn by the firm’s commitment to modernising legal practices. Cooper noted, “I was really attracted to ALT Legal’s ethos and values. It has a refreshing approach to innovate the sector’s traditional models, coupled with a flexibility for working parents.”
Heather Robertson, although trained in law, spent significant years in the tech industry as a project manager. Her expertise in technology is set to be instrumental at ALT Legal, particularly in developing new products like visual contracts. Robertson remarked: “After my experience in the more creative, disruptive tech sector before working in traditional law firms, it’s exciting to join a firm with such an innovative approach that isn’t fixated on billable hours.”
Under the direction of Anna Ashford, ALT Legal emphasises a transition towards a 21st-century law firm model. The firm, founded by Richard Turner and Rob Ashall, leverages a subscription-based model which prioritises genuine client relationships over conventional billing. Ashall commented, “Just because we don’t take ourselves too seriously doesn’t mean we don’t take what we do seriously. Our lawyers, as proven by the recent hires of Alex and Heather, are first rate – they just feel the same as we do, that law is a tool to help businesses. It doesn’t need to be the business prevention unit.”
The firm’s progressive approach is largely driven by client expectations, as articulated by Anna Ashford. The demand for comprehensible legal documents and efficient communication methods such as Slack underscores the evolving client-lawyer relationship. According to Ashford, clients often express a desire for contracts that are understandable to the legally untrained and appreciate the use of plain English.
The recruitment of Heather Robertson and Alex Cooper signifies ALT Legal’s ongoing commitment to redefining modern legal practice.
