A fresh digital visa system is set to streamline tourist entry to Indonesia.
- The e-VoA targets boosting tourism by simplifying visa processes online.
- UK tourists remain the largest European group visiting Bali.
- Indonesia recorded 335,000 UK arrivals last year as tourism rebounds.
- The initiative aims to attract 14 million global tourists in 2024.
The introduction of an electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VoA) by Indonesia marks a strategic move to invigorate its tourism sector. Next month, this online service will become operational, aiming to make the entry process for tourists more seamless. The initiative arrives amid a strong recovery in tourist numbers post-pandemic, with a significant 335,000 visitors from the UK reported last year.
The UK retains its position as the largest European contributor to Bali’s tourism, accounting for approximately 1.74 million visitors over the past decade. This underscores the importance of the e-VoA system in maintaining and potentially increasing this demographic. By simplifying visa applications online before departure, tourists from the UK and 95 other nationalities can enjoy a pre-approved e-VoA, making travel to Indonesia more accessible than ever.
As the Indonesian government sets a target of welcoming 14 million tourists this year, it has already managed to attract nearly 10 million in the first eight months of 2024 alone. This digital advancement in visa processing aligns with broader efforts to enhance tourism infrastructure and offerings across the nation.
The e-VoA can be obtained through the website of visa specialist VFS Global. Applicants need to submit their documents and pay the visa fee, nearly £25, online before travel. Upon approval, the visas will be sent via email, effectively reducing the hassle of visa processing upon arrival in Indonesia.
Immigration director general Silmy Karim emphasised the joint effort with VFS Global to boost foreign visitation, leveraging their extensive network and digital platform. “The Directorate General of Immigration offers the latest digital solutions that enhance the experience for foreign nationals who wish to visit Indonesia,” he stated, highlighting the platform’s convenience even for group travel bookings, which could greatly benefit the travel trade sector.
VFS Global’s commitment to this endeavour is further highlighted by the provision of dedicated email and live support in multiple languages. This initiative is a bid to ensure a user-friendly experience for international applicants from varied linguistic backgrounds, thereby enhancing Indonesia’s appeal as a global travel destination.
The digital visa system promises to significantly impact tourism flow, enhancing Indonesia’s appeal worldwide.
