N Brown is set to introduce a groundbreaking packaging innovation.
- The company will roll out Polymax® packaging, reducing plastic usage by nearly 50%.
- Polymax® packaging is biodegradable, recyclable, and eco-friendly.
- This initiative aims to tackle the recycling challenges faced by consumers.
- N Brown leads as the largest UK retailer adopting this sustainable solution.
N Brown, known for its brands such as JD Williams, Jacamo, and Simply Be, is making significant strides in reducing its environmental footprint. From November 2024, the company will commence the rollout of Polymax® packaging, which is seen as a crucial step forward in sustainability efforts. This packaging stands out because it can biodegrade or be recycled without contaminating other materials, offering a cleaner alternative to traditional plastic films.
Recycling contamination in the UK is a notable problem, with many individuals attempting to recycle plastic film incorrectly. This has led to a mere 9% correct recycling rate of flexible plastics. Introducing Polymax® packaging is expected to alleviate these issues by enabling consumers to dispose of packaging safely and responsibly, whether in general waste bins or recycling streams. It is even capable of dissolving in hot water, which minimises the risk of microplastics.
The potential impact of adopting Polymax® globally is substantial, with estimates suggesting a saving of 25 million tonnes of conventional packaging from entering the environment annually. Within N Brown’s operations, the switch to Polymax® is anticipated to cut conventional plastic usage by 44%, underscoring the company’s commitment to sustainable practices.
As Sarah Welsh, CEO of retail at N Brown Group, articulated, the firm’s dedication to reducing environmental impact while maintaining quality is paramount. She highlighted packaging as a significant innovation area, with Polymax® providing a viable solution without compromising on packaging effectiveness. Customers can look forward to receiving products in this new packaging by autumn, ahead of a complete rollout by the end of 2025.
The introduction of Polymax® packaging not only positions N Brown as a leader in sustainable retail practices but also sets a standard for other companies in the industry. Tom Wielicki of Maxim Labels and Packaging expressed excitement over this development, recognising it as a pivotal move towards eliminating single-use plastics in fashion packaging. He calls for other major UK retailers to emulate N Brown in prioritising sustainability.
N Brown’s adoption of Polymax® marks a significant advancement in eco-friendly packaging solutions.
